The Health Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Major duties include but are not limited to:
Responsible for handling instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures. Setting up a sterile field with all required items for each procedure. Planning and discussing each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure. Preparing , organizing and maintaining highly complex surgical setups. Observing and responding promptly to each stage of the surgical procedures and anticipated needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time. Utilizing universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment Assisting team members with care of the patient, i.e. positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies. Handling all specimens appropriately. Performing sponges, sharps and instrument counts to verify accuracy. Responsible for accountability of all surgical instruments and equipment used during surgical procedures. Assisting the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, and cutting sutures. Participating in Time Out and other patient safety programs. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
performing surgical duties such as sponges, sharps, and instrument counts, preparing skin grafts, and suctioning. Setting up a sterile field and prep all equipment/items to use for various and highly-complex surgical procedures with different set-ups. Assisting a Surgical Team during the full perioperative period. Knowledge of highly technical surgical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic techniques. Skills in setting up a sterile filed and prepping all equipment for surgical procedures Performing surgical duties such as sponges, sharps and instrument counts. Assisting surgical team during full perioperative period. Knowledge of surgical instruments, human anatomy, physiology and aseptic techniques. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:
1 - Knowledge of highly technical surgical instruments, human anatomy, physiology and aseptic techniques to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery. 2 - Knowledge of a wide variety of complex surgical procedures and possible complication in order to prepare for procedure, to anticipate the needs of the surgical team to respond with speed and accuracy. 3 - Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and protocol to select the correct instruments for the procedure, anticipate the needs of the surgeon and on a regular and recurrent basis recognize and respond to a variety of critical situations. 4 - Knowledge of operation and function of all surgical instruments and equipment, testing procedures to assure all equipment works and proper postoperative decontamination procedures. Physical Requirements:
Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic techniques and in a manner requiring little or no effort for the surgeon.
