Health Technician (Mental Health)

The Health Technician (MH) provides personal nursing care to substance abuse and psychiatric patients and serves as an active participating member of the healthcare team. Duties of the position include and are not limited to:
Observe, document and report to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior, attitude, physical complaints, appearance, vital signs and/or changes in the patient condition that may be related to medications, sensory distortions or medical conditions. Maintain a therapeutic and safe ward milieu by identifying, reporting and eliminating potential hazards. Perform one-to-one observations of patients Identify patients at risk for suicide/self harm, falls, disruptive behavior Intervene and restrain violent or potentially violent or suicidal Veterans using therapeutic communication or physical means required by Prevention and Management Disruptive Behavior Training. Participate in the admission of patients by obtaining information, orienting patients to the unit and treatment team, obtaining vital signs and weight, checking patients and their belongings for hazardous items Assist physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of clients receiving medical care for psychiatric or substance abuse treatment conduct patient meetings and groups. Utilizing a variety of treatment approaches to promote recovery on a one-to-one group interaction level. Follow designated charting techniques to post patient charts that provide an outline or summary of patient status. Maintain patient and clinical records from admission to discharge Secure patient confidence and cooperation during hospital stay, including explaining procedures and guidelines while maintaining therapeutic boundaries. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:
1. Knowledge of a body of standardized materials and skills sufficient to perform nursing care requiring considerable training and experience.Knowledge and ability of preventative management of disruptive behavior training courses I, II, III, IV 2.Knowledge of all types of substance abuse and psychiatric disorders, skills sufficient to utilize appropriate therapeutic treatments 3.Knowledge and skills sufficient to identify behavioral problems and progress of illness for purpose of observing and communicating with members of treatment team 4.Knowledge to utilize proper terminology related to observing, interpreting and reporting the physical and emotional reaction of patients Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
