PURPOSE:

We are seeking a technician Staff Member who will focus on the development, processing and characterization of advanced fibers derived from various precursors. This position resides in the Advanced Fibers Manufacturing Group in the Manufacturing Science Technology Division in the Energy Science Technology Directorate Sciences Directorate (ETSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Advance Fibers Manufacturing Technology Group advances the science and technology base for manufacturing of advanced materials and composites by conducting innovative research and development for a broad spectrum of programs and applications.

The technician will support the technical and research and development staff in the Department or disciplined performing in range of routine tasks associated with the perspective project. Specifically, the group is looking for an early career technician with experience in developing and executing advanced fibers and its composite materials for use in critical energy and/or national security mission areas such as:
Transportation Materials Technologies, Wind Energy, Energy Storage, Off-Shore Oil and Gas, Industrial Processes, Aerospace and Defense, and Infrastructure. The technician is responsible for performing a variety of routine field tasks related to the technical discipline guided by detailed instructions and close supervision from the technical and/or research and development staff in the department or discipline performing a range of routine tasks associated with the perspective project.

Major Duties/
Responsibilities:

We have an opening for Advanced Fiber Line Processing Technicians. This position is located at the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility. In this position you will be responsible for operating the carbon fiber line, developing process conditions, testing and analysis on raw materials, final product, and research and development samples. You will work with a diverse group of engineers and scientists. In this position you will report to the Group Lead for the Advanced Fibers Group.

You will also:

  • Develop lot specification for carbon fiber deployed to ORNL partners
  • Support operations activities in terms of stability and control of the carbon fiber line.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports for management team
  • Assist with testing and calibrating lab equipment. Assist the Laboratory Supervisor in developing and maintaining an operation calibration system
  • Assist with research and development efforts and projects.
  • Support commercialization efforts with CRADAs partners
  • Develop procedures (including job safety analysis) and training videos for operating the laboratory equipment(s), and testing & analysis of carbon fiber material. Train the trainees.
  • Work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time in a fast-paced environment
  • Set priorities appropriately to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines
  • Maintain consistent work schedule to meet fiber production requirements for program
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications

Basic
Qualifications:

  • High School diploma
  • A minimum of 1 - 3 years of advanced fiber production experience

Preferred
Qualifications:

Associates Degree in Science Related Field and/or Advanced Fiber manufacturing experience in industry, research organization, or national laboratory.

PREFFERED
Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience in conducting and directing research activities and a proven record with both R&D success as well as conceiving ideas and successfully attracting and developing R&D projects.
  • The ability to effectively collaborate with both internal and external researchers to the organization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an external and internal scientific audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the production of research proposals.
  • Motivated and safety conscious
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Other Information:

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
